Successful First Quarter for Port Saint John
SAINT JOHN (NB) - It was a record-breaking first quarter for Port Saint John.Numbers up until Mar. 31 of this year show major increases in tonnage in four areas.PotashCorp saw a record-breaking 277,249 tonnes of potash transported through Port Saint John, up 141 per cent over the same quarter in 2012.Forest products saw a 32 per cent increase from 2012 with woodpulp tonnage forming the largest percentage of this increase rising from 13,136 tonnes to 22,517 tonnes, marking a 71 per cent increase year-over-year.Container tonnage saw a 72 per cent increase from 2012, going from 63,984 tonnes to 110,128 tonnes.Container TEUS (twenty-foot equivalent units) saw a 52 per cent increase from 2012, going from 10,978 TEUs to 16,645 TEUs.“As we move into the second quarter of 2013, we are pleased that our partners are experiencing cargo gains in many sectors of our business.
