OUR EDUCATION PROGRAM
Saint John is called the “Port City” for a reason. Our Port is located in the heart of the city, surrounded by the community. Students may see the Port every day but be unaware of who we are and what we do. Port Saint John is a critical part of the transportation infrastructure of Canada and a cornerstone of the New Brunswick Economy. Our Port is the largest in Atlantic Canada by volume and the fastest-growing container port (2022) on the East Coast of North America. Therefore, we believe it is important for students to understand this vital piece of their community.
Our education program comprises both a physical tour of the port and in-class visits, which aim to give students a better understanding of the Port and Maritime industries and provide exposure to future career opportunities. The program complements the curriculum put in place by the Department of Education and can be adapted to any grade level.
IN-PERSON PORT TOURS
Our team understands that experiential learning encourages critical thinking, questions, and discussion. A tour of the Port aims to engage students by extending learning outside of the classroom and seeing the city through a new lens.
Want an in-person tour of our port? Visit the bookings page linked below!
Please note: Schools are required to arrange their own transportation.
CLASSROOM VISITS
We also go into the classroom to show students practical examples of how the Port connects our city with the rest of the world during social studies units focused on interdependence and interconnection between our city and the world. This helps students form a basic understanding of global trade and logistics, and gives them the opportunity to engage with and ask us any questions they may have about the topic. ANNUAL POST-SECONDARY CASE STUDY COMPETITION
In 2023, Port Saint John launched its inaugural case study competition in partnership with the Pond-Deshpande Centre at UNB. The competition provides an opportunity for post-secondary school students in New Brunswick to solve challenges the Port is working on, such as decarbonization, supply chain fluidity, and digitization. In the first year of this competition, participants were tasked with finding innovative ways Port Saint John can influence, incentivize and encourage their tenants to embrace sustainability and decarbonization initiatives. After several rigorous rounds of selection, the Climate Warriors team, comprised of 5 MBA students from the University of New Brunswick, emerged as winners.
This competition will be held yearly, with a new topic each year. Information for each year’s competition will be on our website and social media channels as well as on the website and social media channels of Pond Deshpande Centre.
