Strong 2014 Year at Port Saint John Continues
SAINT JOHN (NB) – In 2013, the Port experienced 60 per cent growth in their container sector.This year, the upward trend has continued.“These increases continue to mean greater economic activity for our city and province such as the 500 direct and indirect jobs attributable to movement of containerized cargo at this Port” Jim Quinn, president and CEO, of Port Saint John, said. “In the dry bulk sector, we were pleased to recently learn that the potash deposit has been reached in the new Picaddilly mine. Our natural resource sector is vitally important to the Provincial economy and this Port is ready to be the marine connection to bring New Brunswick’s natural resources to the world.”Year-to-date 2014 Container Statistics

The port also reported a significant increase in dry bulk with a notable 94% year-to-date increase in salt from the new potash mine at Piccadilly (nearly 439,339 tonnes year-to-date 2014 as compared to 226,934 tonnes in the prior year).These individual sector increases are the largest factors contributing to an overall 12% year-to-date tonnage increase at Port Saint John operated facilities.Port Saint John is Eastern Canada’s largest port by tonnage and has a diverse cargo base, including dry and liquid bulk, break bulk, containers, and cruise.
