SAINT JOHN (NB) – On May 25, a soapbox car from Port Saint John and Havelock School will be racing down the track at the New Brunswick Soap Box Derby. The third annual derby takes place at the Lily Lake Pavillion on May 24 and 25. The event raises funds for PALS (Partners Assisting Local Schools) and provides a positive recreation opportunity for Saint John schoolchildren. From the Havelock Hurricanes, Ben B. will be driving the Port Saint John vehicle. The Grade 4 student’s pit crew consists of Emily G., Ross H., Carson C. and Lauren D."We are thrilled to be sponsored by Port Saint John for this year’s Soap Box Derby. It is impressive that organizations are so willing to put forth such effort to create enriching opportunities for students. Our students get an opportunity to build their team and leadership skills by participating in an event that they wouldn’t normally be exposed to. We even had a teachable moment when they wanted to know about the history of soapbox cars," Cynthia Freeman King, principal of Havelock School, said.
The derby is modeled after the All American Soap Box Derby. Youth race in two divisions – stock and super stock – down the hill at Rockwood Park. Winners from each division, along with an adult supervisor, travel to the National All American Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio from July 21 to 28.
Best of luck to Ben and his crew!
