Port Saint John Lands Second Global Container Connection
SAINT JOHN (NB) - One of the world’s top global container lines is now offering a weekly service through Port Saint John.Hapag-Lloyd, a German company offering 90 liner services across all continents, will be offering their services through Tropical Shipping. Port Saint John has been the Canadian home-base for Tropical’s container service for the past 12 years.“This new partnership between Hapag-Lloyd and Tropical adds so much value for regional shippers and receivers. This arrangement will provide these businesses with another link to the global market. Tropical has long been an outstanding partner and we’re pleased to see they’ve entered into this new collaboration with Hapag-Lloyd,” Jim Quinn, president and CEO of Port Saint John, said.This new addition to the Port comes just months after record-breaking container tonnage numbers were released. At the close of June, container cargo tonnage moved was up 100 per cent over the same period in 2012.“This is something we could not have done without valuable partnerships with our established container shipping lines at Port Saint John. Our network of stakeholders and global position are making Port Saint John a powerhouse,” Quinn said.Port Saint John is Eastern Canada’s largest port by tonnage and has a diverse cargo base, including dry and liquid bulk, break bulk, containers, and cruise.
