Port Saint John announces a project for the community in honour of Canada 150
This summer residents and visitors will be able to experience a new vantage point of the Port and waterfront from a trail extension off Harbour Passage onto the North side of Long Wharf.“The Board of Directors is delighted to share this news with our community. We recognize that residents enjoy experiencing a closer connection to the water and this new trail will not only provide this opportunity but also respect international protocols for security at marine terminals,” said Philip Brewer, Chair of the Board for Port Saint John.“We are excited to share the details about the trail extension onto Long Wharf which is a gift from our Port to the community in celebration of the 150th year of Canada’s existence as a country. We’ve been listening to what our residents and community stakeholders have said about access to the waterfront, and this is a tangible result of that dialogue,” added Jim Quinn, President & CEO of Port Saint John. The trail extension has been designed by the Glenn Group Ltd and is being carried out in partnership with Saint John Waterfront Development.“Saint John Waterfront Development are also excited that we have been able to work with Port Saint John to bring this addition to the recreational experience along Harbour Passage as part of a celebration of Canada 150,” said Kent MacIntyre, General Manager, Saint John Waterfront Development. The Long Wharf Trail extension is approximately 1 kilometre round trip and will include a TD Bank sponsored eco hub, a round seating area suitable for classes on field trips or residents who wish to enjoy a view and their lunch, it also includes ‘selfie’ vantage point with a mounted frame. With the agreement of Local ILA 273, Port Saint John will also move a monument commemorating workers who have lost their lives working on the waterfront which is currently located nearly Pugsley Slip to the Long Wharf Trail.“Our membership is pleased that this important monument to those who have lost their lives at our working waterfront will have greater prominence in it’s new home on the Long Wharf Trail. The new trail is a tremendous addition to the recreational part of the waterfront and we commend the Port for this commitment to the community,” said Patrick Riley, Business Agent for ILA Local 273.Work is underway at the site with a planned opening date of July 1.
