When planning a field trip, teachers may wish to consider reviewing the curriculum materials to prepare students for their port tour. Subject areas which may be covered in a tour, depending on activity occurring on the day, may include: cargo movement, port infrastructure, cruise operations (movement of the vessel and movement of people to the shore), dredging and the environment.

Schools may also request a guest speaker who will visit their location and discuss the type of activity which takes place at a port. Such discussions may also include question and answer sessions about career paths and career planning about port or marine job opportunities.
